If the dishwasher is not working at all, then there maybe two basic problem; either the external switch is faulty or the door has not been shut properly. As long as the door of the machine is not locked, the dishwasher will not start working. If both the external switch and the door are working fine, then the off/on switch might be damaged. You will have to call in a mechanic in that case to get it replaced. Sometimes it happens that the tray inside the washer stops revolving. It may be because the sides of the tray are too dirty, hindering its free moment. You can remove the tray and make sure that the corners on which it is hanging are clean and dry. Replace the tray back in and see if it has started working, if not, then you need to get your floating switch changed.
If your dishwasher is not draining water then you need to make sure that the drainage pipe is not blocked with any sort of edible etc. The dishes etc that you put into the washer should not have bones or other things in them, which may cause water blockage in the drain. In case you need to spray the dishes with hot water, it is best that you run the water in your sink for a couple of minutes before attaching it to your dishwasher. Pay special focus on the fact that you do not use too much detergent in your dishwasher and that the detergent is of good quality. Keep your washer clean for better result and do not over load it. The more attentive you are towards it, the better it will work.
